Speaking at the second anniversary of the group's 'The Long Walk for Freedom', a trek from the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos to the National Assembly in Abuja in 2018, Mrs Foluso Oyenuga FCA, the Founder and President of the group, said Nigeria as a nation is wasting her future by leaving her children unattended, uneducated, unclothed, unfed and unhealthy.
"The Nigerian child attracts pity and compassion, not from our leaders, but of the international community. The Nigerian child is left wandering the streets of our big cities, most of them with a declaration of the hunger in their stomachs by the plates and cups in their hands. What is the primary responsibility of a nation if not to provide for her children; to see to their education, welfare and general upbringing?
Oyenuga, who is also a senior partner at Ade Esan & Company (an off-shoot of Spencer Thirwell Chartered Accountants), a highly reputable firm of Chartered Accountants, further said "The vision of change we have when we embarked on the long trek two years ago gives hope to many of us as a testimony of the unshakable faith we have in ourselves to build a solid future for our children, whom our leaders have neglected, except for their own offspring and descendants".
She however expressed her organisation willingness to find a lasting solution to this predicament by calling on all well meaning Nigerians, local and international organizations and institutions of learning, to partner f the Nigeria Child."The Nigerian child needs help—so much help. It is for this reasons that New Nation Enlightenment Foundation, after due consultation with our Strategy Council, have now declared this year “The Year the Nigerian Child.” This year—January 29, 2020 to January 28, 2021—NNEF/NNN shall do all in her power to take the lead in providing for the Nigerian child.
"By this new policy, we throw our doors open to individuals, local and international organizations and institutions of learning, to partner with NNEF/NNN for the benefits of the Nigerian child, as we intend to get involved in the implementation of the UNSDG's 2,3,4,5 & 6 in this current year to make our own impact." Oyenuga concluded.
